Open Question: who is responsible for the trailer?

Some independent truckers own their own trailers. Is there ever a situation where the customer provides a trailer? How does this work. If you carry a load on a flatbed from Evansville IN to St. Louis, MO, is it possible to then pick up a load for a closed trailer, they call it a van.
